The Themis Network representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina participated in a conference organised in the framework of the project Capacity Building in Forest Policy and Governance in the Western Balkan Region (CAPABAL), which took place in Sarajevo on August 23-25, 2016. The event was organised by the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Sarajevo.
The CAPABAL project aims to enhance forest and natural resources policy and governance, as well as sustainable, multifunctional forest management in the Western Balkans and across Europe. It does so by creating a strong, regional collaborative network of experienced and future leaders in science, policy and management, that is well connected to European and international networks. As Western Balkan countries work towards EU membership, reforms in the areas of policy, economics and governance are critical in order to achieve compliance with EU directives and legislative requirements.
The aim of the conference was to present and discuss the activities of three working groups, short-term scientific missions and training schools. The keynote speakers were Faruk Mekić, who emphasised the imperative of regional research cooperation in the Western Balkans; Martin Šolar, who presented the vision and mission of WWF Adria's regional cooperation projects; and Lejla Šuman, who introduced the Themis Network and the Regional Environmental Center.
