National Training in Moldova

On December 16, 2016, a national training on environmental protection and combating environmental crimes in the Republic of Moldova took place in Chisinau.

The event provided an opportunity to present to stakeholders an overview of the Themis Network and its results to date in Moldova; discuss the project’s strengths and challenges; and build awareness among all state actors regarding environmental inspections, nature conservation, forest management, environmental impact assessment, waste and environmental crimes in Moldova.

The 24 participants included representatives of the Ministry of Environment, the forestry agency Moldsilva, the State Environmental Inspectorate, the Environmental Agency of Chisinau, and the environmental inspectorates of Causeni, Hincești, Ialoveni, Orhei, Straseni and Ungheni.

Based on the discussions, participants agreed on the need to:

  • involve citizens in the process of uncovering and combating environmental crimes;
  • review the contraventions/penal procedure and make penalties more severe so as to reflect the damage caused to the environment;
  • provide more training for inspectors to improve their capacities for detecting illegal cutting;
  • provide more training on CITES;
  • provide more training on environmental impact assessment methodology and tools;
  • raise public awareness about the risks of deforestation; and
  • raise public awareness about unlawful waste disposal.
